Debunking DIY Pest Control Myths

Do It Yourself projects have become one of the most popular things people search on the web. Maybe you’re thinking about sewing some new curtains. Perhaps you’re looking to make the perfect holiday meal for your in-laws. Maybe your sink is backed up and you don’t want to spend the $200 to have a plumber come out. We all have our reasons for why DIY projects are of interest.

There most definitely are some great DIY tips and tricks out there that do actually deliver the results you are trying to achieve. However, sometimes we can’t believe what we see, especially when it comes to DIY. Let’s debunk some of the most common DIY pest control myths.

The Assumptions

Many people think they can effectively treat pests themselves. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Here are a few examples of some of the many myths about DIY pest control.

  • A clean house equates to a pest-free home
  • Bed bugs can be treated on your own
  • Out of sight, out of mind
  • Poison to control

Sure, there are tons of readily available products for consumer purchase. There’s also thousands of online suggestions, recommendations, and “organic” ways to treat anything you can think of, including those unwelcome pests. Maybe you don’t even realize you have a pest problem yet. Just because you can’t see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there. If you can see them, before running to your local grocery store to purchase the latest and greatest pest killer, aka poison, think twice and consider the health implications those products may have to you and your loved ones.

The Reality

There is no method that is 100% effective in completely eliminating unwanted pests from joining your the party. But, the more proactive and consistent you are with treatments, the less likely it is to have irreversible damage to your home and health. Maintaining a clean house is incredibly important. Keep food and drinks stored appropriately. Keep windows and doorways free of debris and dirt. Most importantly, just be aware. If you live in an area prone to certain pests, it’s in your best interest to contact Dayton's Pest Control to conduct an assessment, help develop a customized treatment plan, and ensure you, and your home, are protected against unwanted pests that can ultimately lead to a lot of undo stress, financial strain, and, potentially, health implications that could have otherwise been avoided.
